Features: Waterford Single Malt Hook Head Edition is a limited edition whisky that is born from barley grown by Martin Foley in an extreme maritime terroir on the south coast of Ireland, near the iconic Hook Head lighthouse. This place is constantly exposed to storms laden with salt and Atlantic fog, which directly influences the characteristics of the grain, providing a distinctive and complex profile to the distillate. The Waterford distillery is known for its focus on traceability and purity of terroir, keeping each harvest separate to reveal the maximum expression of each estate and soil.
In this case, the barley used comes from clay and limestone soils of the Elton series, which provides a unique mineral structure. The maturation process is carried out in a careful combination of barrels: 46% first-fill American oak, 22% new American oak, 15% French oak and 17% natural sweet wine barrels (Vin Doux Naturel).
This diversity of barrels allows the development of a very complex aromatic and gustatory profile, highlighting its spicy character and richness of nuances. The combination of tradition and advanced technology in distillation positions it as one of the most representative expressions of Waterford’s innovative approach.
Tasting Notes:
- View: Straw colour with golden tears that cover the glass.
- Nose: Aromas of earthy malt, damp earth, citrus peel and bread crust. Spices such as cloves and white pepper are perceived, along with notes of caramel, milk chocolate, salted popcorn and green oak leaves.
- Mouth: Powerful and spicy attack with cloves, white pepper and salted caramel. Hints of liquorice, gingerbread, lemon zest and chocolate with chili appear.
- Finish: The texture is rich and oily, with a dry and long finish, where the spices persist, leaving a warm and slightly spicy sensation.
