General Information: Nicole Barbe Ponsardin, the widow (in French veuve) of Clicquot had to take over in 1805, at the age of 27, the thriving business that her husband ran: the champagne house François Clicquot, a textile businessman who founded his winery in the French region of Champagne in 1772. The widow Clicquot was a pioneer in a world ruled by men by taking over the winery, and followed the path of innovation that had marked the father of her husband, who in 1775 had devised the first rosé champagne in history. Under Nicole’s direction, in 1810 the company was renamed Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin and the house’s first vintage champagne was made. The German Antoine Müller joined as a winemaker, who perfected the champenoise method and revolutionized the champagne making market (advances such as ‘remuage’ are the work of Müller). The prestige of the winery has not stopped growing and today is one of the most popular Champagne brands, with its unmistakable label between yellow and orange, and its leading cuvée “La Gran Dame”, one of the most complex and fine champagnes.
